New Water Level Monitoring Technology

North Ridgeville Public Works officials have begun using Hyfi water detection sensors to monitor water flow and water levels at key locations throughout the city. Six sensors have been installed on the banks of French Creek at Mills Road, Mildred Street, Center Ridge Road, Bainbridge Road, Chestnut Ridge Road, Root Road and Gatestone Road.

The new system is designed to send real-time alerts to the Public Works and Engineering staff when water levels reach certain thresholds, helping crews stay informed and respond more quickly to potential flooding or drainage issues. This technology not only targets storm events, it also monitors the flow at different points in order to detect obstructions or blockages between those points. The system helps officials to monitor the amount of water coming into the city and determine how long it will take to exit the city.

“We are currently gathering all the data needed to get the notification system fully set up and operational in the next few weeks,” said Stormwater Foreman Ray Ford. “This technology plays a huge role in allowing us to observe water levels at various locations. It will serve as a valuable tool in helping us quickly notify the community if any issues arise.”

At this time, the system is in a testing phase. City officials are closely monitoring the performance of the sensors and ensuring that alerts are accurate and not false alarms.

“This is a trial run,” added Ford. “If we find the system is a useful resource for the city, we’ll consider requesting funds to expand it and install additional sensors in the future.”

The City of North Ridgeville remains committed to using innovative solutions to enhance public safety and improve service delivery for residents.
