Census Update: Respond to Shape the Future

Each Wednesday, the City receives an update on the responses to the 2020 Census and as of July 1, 2020, North Ridgeville remains in the lead among Lorain County cities and villages.  North Ridgeville's response rate is 81.4% followed by Avon Lake at 79.8%.  Thank you for your responses and let's get everyone counted!  The 2020 Census will determine congressional representation, inform hundreds of billions in federal funding every year, and provide data that will impact communities for the next decade.

Responding to the census helps communities get the funding they need and helps businesses make data-driven decisions that grow the economy. Census data impact our daily lives, informing important decisions about funding for services and infrastructure in our community, including health care, senior centers, jobs, political representation, roads, schools, and businesses. More than $675 billion in federal funding flows back to states and local communities each year based on census data.

Important Dates:

Mid-March 2020:  Most households will receive their initial invitations to respond, which will be followed by three additional mailings. People can choose to respond to the census in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail.

April 1, 2020: Census Day is observed nationwide. By this date, most homes will have received an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census.  Respond based on where you live and sleep most of the times as of April 1, 2020.

May 2020: Census takers begin visiting homes that haven't responded to the 2020 Census to make sure everyone is counted.  This operation, called "Nonresponse Followup," will last through July.  Self-responses will still be accepted to the census during this time.

December 2020: The Census Bureau delivers apportionment counts to the President and Congress as required by law.

March 31, 2021: By this date, the Census Bureau will send redistricting counts to states. This information is used to redraw legislative districts based on population changes.
