The North Ridgeville Community Garden is starting its eighth season as a community project in partnership with the City of North Ridgeville. Applications are now being accepted to participate in the 2018 growing season for the North Ridgeville Community Garden.
Application deadline is April 30, 2018. Garden plots will be assigned by May 15, 2018.
The garden is located along Chestnut Ridge Road, across from where exit 3 comes off Route 10 and enters Chestnut Ridge Road. The total garden area covers about 2 acres. There are over 100 plots within the total area, plus a large area marked off for North Ridgeville Community Care to grow crops. Any North Ridgeville resident can participate in the project by growing crops on plots of 20 feet by 15 feet. The land is plowed and disced by a local farmer in the spring. The plots are then measured and marked off by volunteer gardeners. Weather permitting, the plots are usually ready for planting by Memorial Day.
Free water is supplied to the plot via an extensive system of hoses that are connected to a main water source. A large tiller and a variety of garden tools are available to maintain the plots. The plots can be fenced (although we prefer they not be) or left open at the discretion of each gardener. The fee for each initial garden plot is $20 and there is a $20 fee for an additional garden plot if available (we try to make the plots adjacent if you take two). These funds pay for various maintenance and garden upkeep costs. The community garden is a nonprofit operation.
The soil is very fertile and favorable for planting. It was formerly planted by the farmer who prepares the land for planting in the spring and who plants soybeans in the acreage behind the community garden. Each gardener plants and cares for their own plot. Any excess produce is donated to North Ridgeville Community Care.
Those interested in joining should complete the application below. Applications are also available for pickup at the North Ridgeville Mayor’s Office (7307 Avon Belden Road) and Pioneer Ridge Prairie Lodge (9479 Saw Mill Trace).
Applications must be returned with payment. Only checks will be accepted. Please make payable to: North Ridgeville Community Garden. Completed applications can be submitted to the Pioneer Ridge Prairie Lodge or the North Ridgeville Mayor’s Office. All applications will be processed by community garden personnel.
